How To – Upload a File to SharePoint

Uploading a file to SharePoint is very simple process, SharePoint Offers four different ways to upload a file:

1. Upload a File from The Web Interface

Browse to the library you wish to upload the file to, then navigate to the folder you wish to upload the file to. If you have the required permissions the Upload button will appear between the New and Action buttons on the bar above the files listing.

Clicking the Upload button, will open the upload file page where you can pick a single file by clicking the Browse button or upload multiple files using the Upload Multiple Files link (this may or may not be visible depending on your browser).
If you select Upload Multiple Files you will be presented with file explorer interface of the files on your PC allowing you to check the files to be uploaded.

Once the upload is down you may be prompted for to enter the meta-data, but this depends on the setup of the document library. In addition, if the library supports several content types you may have to select the content type the file belongs to.

2. Upload a File From Microsoft Office

Office 2003 and later provides the functionality for files to be saved directly to SharePoint (although the interface may vary slightly across versions).

To save a file in SharePoint from Excel, Word or PowerPoint simply use the standard Save As or (Save if the doc hasn’t already been saved). Then enter the path to your SharePoint site in the address bar and hit enter, and you will be prompted to login using your credentials:

Then you will be presented with the site’s structure inside the Save As dialog:

Navigate to the relevant site and library and click Save. Depending on the document library’s configuration you may be presented with different dialogs such as a dialog to confirm the content type.

3. Upload a File Using Web Folders

Web folders are a type of folder which are typically installed with Microsoft Office and provide a direct interface to SharePoint. There are several different ways t o connect to a SharePoint using Web Folders but the most efficient to to navigate to the relevant document library and select Open with Windows Explorer from the Actions menu.

This opens the explorer interface and files can be moved into the folder for the library by using the standard file explorer drag and drop operation. Click close when done and you will need to refresh the SharePoint page for the file to appear.

4. Upload a File Using the Explorer View

On the right of the library page, click the dropdown menu and select Explorer View:

Once in the Explorer View you can copy the files you wish to add by simply selecting them and clicking Copy on the right click menu in Windows, then in the SharePoint frame right-click and you will be confronted with a security prompt – click OK and then Paste the file(s).
