What Audit Capabilities are included in SharePoint 2010

Auditing in SharePoint 2010 is very fine grained and allows for logging for the user modifications or access in the below scenario’s:

For Documents and Items, the below activities are logged :

  • Opening or downloading documents, viewing items in lists, or viewing item properties
  • Editing items
  • Checking out or checking in items
  • Moving or copying items to another location in the site
  • Deleting or restoring items

For Lists, Libraries, and Sites, the below activities are logged :

  • Editing content types and columns
  • Searching site content
  • Editing users and permissions

In SharePoint 2010, there is also the ability to enable Audit Log Trimming which stores the  audit data in a Document Library.

In addition, ULS is improved with the introduction of a new and extensible Logging database, control over disk space allocated to logging,c onfigurable noise suppression (Event Log Flood Protection), resource throttling, correlation Ids. Overall you should see about a 50% reduction in space used for ULS logs.
