To add or remove users from a Group firstly navigate to the relevant group (Site Actions > Site Settings > People and Groups > yourGroup ). Then in the group page, click the New dropdown and select Add Users:

This opens the Add Users page (below) where you can either add users by entering them in the Users/Groups box (names should be separated by a semicolon) or click the address book to search and select users from the directory. After you have selected the users to add, either select the group to which you wish to add them or give the users direct permissions. The latter option is not recommended as it will make subsequent administration more difficult since each user’s permissions will have to been updated separately in future.

This will direct you to the Settings page for the list or library. From this page click Permissions for this document library from the Permissions and Management menu, this will direct you to the Permissions page where you can select Edit Permissions from the Actions menu. One important thing to note is that by default, all lists and libraries inherit permissions from the site and have the exact same permission sets. To edit the permissions this must be turned off and you will be prompted to accept this after clicking Edit Permissions (unless inheritance has already been turned off).

Once inheritance has been turned off you will be able to edit user permissions or remove users from the Actions menu, or add new users from the New menu.

Permissions on a file or item item in SharePoint are inherited from the list or library they are in, however it may be required to have permissions set for individual files or list items.

First, navigate to the file or list item you wish to set the permissions for, hover the mouse over it, click the dropdown list and select Manage Permissions (note, that if are not authorized to edit permissions, this option will not be shown).

Selecting Manage Permissions will open up a page showing the permissions for each user or group:

It is important to note that, by default, permission inheritance is set to On. This means that the file or list item inherits permissions from its parent list or library, when inheritance is set to On it is not possible to edit the permissions of the file or list item independent of the list or library. To prevent a file or item inheriting permissions, click the Actions dropdown menu in the Manage Permissions page and select Edit Permissions :

(Note that if inheritance is not On then you will be shown an Inherit Permissions option to turn it on)

After selecting Edit Permissions you will be prompted to confirm that you wish to disconnect the file or list item’s permission from the parent’s, click OK. On the Permissions page, you can select a user/group and remove or edit their permissions by selecting the appropriate option from the Actions menu. Alternatively you can add a user by selecting Add Users from the New menu.

Adding and editing SharePoint group permissions is a central admin task which SharePoint makes very easy through the configuration of permission levels.

If you have created a group in Sharepoint you will likely want to create some custom permissions for the group.

Select Site Settings > Advanced Permissions (alternatively click ‘Site Permissions’ in the far left column).

Click Settings > Permission Levels:

Click Add Permission Level

Name the new permission level and configure the permissions using the checkbox listing and then click Create.

Navigate to the Permissions page (you can easily do this using the ‘breadcrumbs’ navigation trail just above the page title).

The new permission you just created should now be visible in the Permissions listing and you can select it and click OK. Technically you can have more than two sets of permissions for a Sharepoint group but this is usually not best practice. It is far better to create a single permission level. One exception to this is Delete permissions, as Delete can have serious consequences Delete is sometimes isolated to a dedicated permission level so admins can very clearly see which groups have Delete permissions.
